Joe Lomax recalls the state of the playing fields 'back in his day'

We were supreme athletes and rugby players in our day
- Joe Lomax

Following on from Peter’s missive last month, I would like to throw in a few details about ‘Compost Corner’.

I myself have been a member of BRUFC for 46 years. Yes, I know – longer than most of you have been alive. Some of our esteemed group have been members a little longer, some a little shorter. So it should be obvious that the ‘old farts’ in the corner are Clubmen.

We have watched the club progress and prosper to what it is today. You will see us looking out of the window at the pitches and muttering ‘niiiice’. To put that in perspective – what is now taken for granted, was not always so.

We used to play on council pitches near Leverhulme Park called New House Playing Fields. What a grand sounding name in reality they were not good, and that’s being very kind. To put some perspective on it, they were bad at the start of the season and as the winter weather worsened they became downright dangerous. We had a pond that appeared every time it rained and one ref. said ‘I don’t like it and if anyone goes down near it I will blow up immediately because nobody is drowning in one of my games’.
So just remember if you complain at all about our club pitches, expect a whole host of abuse from the old gits.

What you must remember is that most of Compost Corner are former playing members of the club who were supreme athletes and rugby players in our day (well, that’s how we remember ourselves) but were even better at socialising and have carried that tradition on into this new era and gained a reputation for being good hosts to travelling visitors.
Just remember that good, bad or ugly we will always support all our teams, senior and junior (the future of our club) who play for Bolton and are proud to do so.
