Ball possession leads to Under 10’s supremacy

Bolton under 10’s travelled to Old Bedians in Manchester for this away fixture.
With the full squad available for the first time for several weeks it was going to be a good test against Old Bedians mix of Under 10’s and 11’s.
It didn’t start to well when James Entwistle was injured in the warm up and was literally only able to play for several minutes but clearly in pain.
Old Bedians lent us Declan who had just turned 12 to even up the sides which paid off in the first two quarters played.
Bolton started the better team with their ‘rucking’ supremacy taking over the game but found it difficult to turn the possession into points as the narrow pitch wasn’t providing the spaces to capitalise on.
The bigger opposition were able to quell attack after attack from the Bolton players. Ben Turner and Oliver Crompton were always looking for gaps in the defence couldn’t find their way through the middle.
Milo Holmes was marshalling his team well providing good ball for his backs but each attack was stifled and yet another ruck transpired.
Alex Ramwell was asked to play a duel role in today’s match which he relished. He was to play part man part beast in that he was asked to play in the forwards and in the backs.
This soon paid off after he was able to rip the ball in a resulting maul and dash for the line for his first try of the day.
The Bolton scrum was struggling against their older and bigger counterparts and possession at the scrum was very sparse.
However Bolton were on top in every other aspect of the game, but more importantly their tackling appeared more superior against the bigger opposition.
In the second quarter Bolton began to take hold of the game and Alex Ramwell scored his second try of the morning with an excellent run down the touchline.
More Bolton pressure saw Josh Grundy diving over the Old Bedians line but the referee disallowed that try after the ball went loose prior to grounding.
Declan scored 1 more try and Zak Grundy had a try disallowed after the referee (who incidentally had a great game) adjudged the ball from Declan to be forward.
The third quarter started with the score 0 v 3 in Bolton’s favour.
Bolton continued in the same vein and continued to pressure the home side. Brave tackling by Ben Turner against bigger opposition stopped Old Bedians getting a foothold. Matthew Moore and James Preston carried the ball well and worked hard in the rucks and mauls against the opposition.
Declan scored a run away try in this quarter and a great breakaway by Alex Ramwell saw Josh Grundy in support and he popped it to Josh who went in for his try.
Old Bedians managed to score a try after sustained pressure from them in this quarter.
In the final quarter Declan switched sides and scored again for Old Bedians. The score now 2 v 5.
Ben Turner nearly went close but was man handled out into touch just short of the touch line.
The final score was 2 v 5 to Bolton.
The Bolton game was described by one of the players as ‘awesome’ and that was just how it felt.
Bolton under 10’s were fantastic against bigger opposition and all the coaching staff and parents were proud of their players.
Player of the match award went to Alex Ramwell for his work rate and two excellent tries.
Ben Turner should be mentioned for his brave and massive tackle count.
Well done.
