The depleted Bolton team journeyed over to the land of the pie eaters early Sunday morning in thick fog, for what was going to be an epic struggle, following the last two encounters which left the pitch littered with walking wounded.
Following numerous injuries and cry offs Bolton managed to muster a squad of 17 players together for the game on a pitch that at some stages you could not see across the width never mind the length due to the thick blanket of fog.
The game started well with both sides rising to the challenge and giving no quarter, and for the first 10 minutes both were equal scoring a try each. The Bolton one was a culmination of a good move from a scrum allowing Ryan to power his way to the try line and several well executed “pick and goes” from the pack. Some of the tackles would not have gone amiss in a wrestling match let alone rugby so Bolton knew it was going to be a hard fought battle.
Over time however the Wigan strength in their squad started to show and they simply outplayed Bolton, running in try after try utilising the kick and chase technique and the slope on their pitch to full advantage.
The positives from the game were the improvement in the scrum, especially with Jack O’Kane making his debut at prop. The more established pairing of Joseph Partington and Jacob Walker with Tom McCormick at hooker making the difference in the front row but Jack is certainly one to watch in future games.
The second row with Will Mac, Gregor, Chris and Jordan also played their part with the no 8 shirt effectively filled by Will B , Joey Gore as ever played a sterling role at no 9 even though his opposite number did need some help from the referee in understanding the offside rule
In the backs, dependable Chris came to the fore once again tackling everything not in a Bolton shirt supported by an ever improving Michael , Levi, David, Morgan and Adam also played well with Ryan being as dependable and dangerous as ever and Nathan putting up another good showing on only his second time in a Bolton shirt.
Coaches Players went to the two new boys in the team Jack and Nathan, Players’ player to Chris and Parents’ player to Will Mac who managed to complete the game without a trip to hospital this time.
