On Saturday Bolton travelled to Didsbury Toc H for the next round of the Cup and came away as deserving winners. The conditions were like a spring day; very warm, sunshine and hardly any wind – perfect for the travelling spectators and the players.
Bolton made a great start to the game and after the kick off Didsbury conceded a scrum in their own half. Bolton won the scrum and some excellent handling led to Sam Smith scoring in the corner within the first minute. After ten minutes Bolton were deemed off side and Didsbury converted the penalty. Bolton’s defence was very good and kept Didsbury at bay with some solid tackling. In the twenty-first minute Bolton turned over the ball, after four phases of play Jonnie Stansfield scored and Alex Waddicar added the conversion. Bolton were starved of the ball because of Didsbury’s retention of it. Any chance Bolton had they moved the ball wide and in the thirty-third minute James Singleton scored a very good try.
Half time score: Didsbury Toc H 3 Bolton 17
At the start of the second half Alex Waddicar scored within two minutes of the restart so Bolton at this stage were well on top. In the fifty-fourth minute, after a great handling movement, Jonnie Stansfield scored an easy try with Joe Speakman adding the conversion. Tries started to come regularly with Bolton backs out playing the opposition; Owen McKenna and Alex Waddicar both scored tries and Joe Speakman added the conversions. Bolton began to relax a little and allowed Didsbury back in the game so they scored in the seventieth minute. Bolton scored their final try of the afternoon through Alex Waddicar which gave him his hat-trick and Joe Speakman converted again. In the last five minutes Didsbury scored two late tries.
Bolton played well against a strong side and to score eight tries was very pleasing indeed. The forwards worked really hard throughout the game and the set pieces were much better. The backs’ handling and decision making was more accurate. This bodes well for the next League game against Aldwinians at Avenue Street next Saturday.
