Bolton started the stronger of the two sides attacking the Garstang defence from the get-go. This early pressure was rewarded when Thomas Relph crossed the whitewash with just two minutes on the board at the end of a period of sustained pressure, un-converted.
Garstang proved their pedigree however and put the pressure right back on Bolton’s defence and pierced the Bolton line to score a converted try swinging the balance back in their favour. The back and forth nature of this game was further highlighted when Geoff Earle crashed over the line from short range to put Bolton back in the lead, converted.
The next ten minutes was a very neutral period with neither side able to exert its dominance, however this neutrality was smashed when Marcus O’Donahoe crossed the line in the corner after a well worked backs move, un-converted.
A Garstang penalty and converted try seemed to be the end of the scoring in the very entertaining first half however Dave Evans erupted in a burst of speed unheard of in a man of his size and smashed his way over the line to put the ball firmly in Bolton’s court, un-converted.
The second half saw Bolton turn the screw against a now weary looking Garstang side. Bolton’s backs were starting to throw the ball around the park with more flair than ever. Marcus O’Donahoe scored his second of the match after 15 minutes of the second half, un-converted.
A Pritchard penalty extended the lead ten minutes later before a try from Danny Joseph crowned a man of the match performance.
Bolton performed extremely well in this match and can be proud of themselves after bouncing back from a string of bad results.
