Bolton first fifteen travelled to Upper Eden (after dropping the second team at Kendal) with a much changed side from the one that had beaten Fleetwood the previous week.
Bolton started quite well with a lot of pressure near the Upper Eden 22 but unfortunately due to handling errors and a good defence, Bolton were not able to turn this pressure into points. Upper Eden opened the scoring after eight minutes with a breakaway try which was not converted. Bolton returned the pressure and Upper Eden defended well but gave away a penalty in the 30th minute which Mark Doherty converted. Straight away from the restart Upper Eden regained the ball and went through to score in the corner.
In the 34th minute, Bolton again had good possession and made the most of it this time. Alex Waddicar was put through to score under the posts and Doherty added the conversion.
Half time score: Upper Eden 10 Bolton 10
In the second half the game ebbed and flowed for both sides and neither side took control until about the 60th minute when Bolton started playing with a little more aggression and style. After some good work by the forwards and some slick handling, Alex Waddicar scored his second try of the afternoon in the 65th minute. Doherty completed the conversion. A good sweeping move down the left hand side of the pitch saw Louis Lockett go over for a try only to be ruled out by the referee. Bolton were finding more space and getting a quicker ball and this enabled them to put Upper Eden under pressure. Bolton’s final try of the afternoon came from a quick ruck ball and good support play from the forwards and the backs which enabled Sam Fogg to go over in the corner.
Upper Eden were not finished yet. With one minute to go, the referee gave them a penalty in their half and due to poor discipline from Bolton, he took the penalty twenty metres forward. With some good strong running from them and support play, they scored in the corner just before full time.
Considering the number of changes Bolton had made for this game and some players playing out of position, the team did very well to achieve a win.
