Four from Four
Bolton 50 Hawcoat Park 20
For the final game in January, Bolton entertained Hawcoat Park at The Avenue. It was great to see so many of their supporters coming down with the team. There was also a large home crowd as the second team game against West Park was cancelled due to the weather. The pitches at Bolton were in fine order and everyone was looking forward to a close match as Hawcoat Park had beaten Wigton the previous week.
The game started with furious pace and in the second minute of the game Hawcoat Park were awarded a penalty for off-side which they converted. After the re-start Bolton came straight back to score a try in the fourth minute. Great support work from Josh Holmes and Ryan McClusky enabled Manny Tailor to score and Louis Lockett added the conversion. Hawcoat Park were awarded another penalty in the seventh minute which they converted. Bolton began to dominate in the scrums, rucks and mauls. Hawcoat Park’s defence held firm and it took until the thirtieth minute for Gaz Pritchard to score a push over try. Within three minutes Bolton were on the scoreboard again. A lovely quick ball from the forwards was passed to Louis Lockett who gave a great ‘Dummy’ and strolled in for the try. Louis added the conversion.
Half-time score: Bolton 19 Hawcoat Park 6
The second half started roughly in the same way as the first half. Bolton had virtually secured the ball off the kick-off but gave it away so Hawcoat Park ran in a relatively easy try in the forty-second minute which they converted. Bolton came back straight away with a lovely try from Chris Brownlow in the forty-third minute. Louis Lockett added the conversion. Bolton were now on top and their defence gave Howcoat Park no real room to move. It was great to see the backs receiving good quick ball and this enabled the wingers to get the ball. In the forty-ninth minute Bolton added another try through precision support play from Gaz Pritchard and Josh Holmes that put Chris Brownlow over for his second try. Louis Lockett added the conversion. In the fifty-fourth minute, Bolton added their sixth try with a tremendous interception from Manny Tailor who cantered thirty metres to score under the posts for his second try. Louis Lockett added the conversion. In the sixty-second minute Bolton chased a kick very well. They put Hawcoat Park under pressure in their twenty-two and won the ball back and Alex Waddicar scored. Hawcoat Park were not finished yet and scored a very good try off a rolling maul from a line out which they converted. Bolton’s final try, in the seventieth minute, came from Chris Cockton who ran a great line to split the defence completely. Alex Waddicar added the conversion. In the last ten minutes Bolton could have scored more tries; Manny Tailor was deemed to have smacked the ball down going for his second interception try. Chris Cockton made a tremendous break but his pass was knocked on two metres from the line.
Final Score: Bolton 50 Hawcoat Park 20
Bolton played strong in places and dominated quite a few areas of play. To win against Hawcoat Park away and at home was pleasing. The team played well. It was difficult to pick Man of the Match as quite a few of the players played to their potential. Josh Holmes was Man of the Match for his running both off the ball and with the ball. We had set out as a team to try to win all the games in January and we have succeeded in doing that. This has put us in a strong position in the league.
