Aldwinians 12 Bolton 17

Bolton visited Aldwinians and came out winners to continue their unbeaten run of 2018.
This was always going to be a hard match for both sides and the muddy pitch didn’t help. Bolton’s defence kept Aldwinians’ big pack at bay and they managed to secure strong ball from both the lineouts and the scrums. It took until the seventeenth minute to break the deadlock. Bolton were entrenched in Aldwinians’ twenty-two. Bolton crossed the Aldwinians’ try line but were held up and at the ensuing scrum were awarded a penalty. Ben Cottam took a quick ‘tap and go’ and scored an easy try which Chris Brownlow converted. Bolton had the ascendency at this stage and tried to play running rugby, but the muddy conditions hindered their progress. In the thirty-eighth Bolton had a scrum which they drove forward. Will Bates picked up the ball and smashed his way over for Bolton’s second try. Chris Brownlow converted again.
Half-time score: Aldwinians 0 Bolton 14
At this stage it looked like Bolton were going to win the match comfortably. Aldwinians had other ideas. In the second half they really came to life and cause Bolton a few problems with their big forwards running at pace and making good yardage. Aldwinians scored their first try in the forty-sixth minute with a lovely chip over the Bolton’s defence for the winger to touch down. Their second try (sixty-sixth minute) of the half came from a five-metre scrum which Bolton were deemed to have collapsed it. The referee had no hesitation in giving a penalty try. Bolton now led 14-12. The game came a bit more alive with both teams wanting the win. Bolton were denied a couple of good scoring chances by last-minute defence by Aldwinians. Bolton’s defence got better and better towards the end of the game. In the seventy-sixth minute Bolton were awarded a penalty. Alex Waddicar added the three points to seal the result.
Full time: Aldwinians 12 Bolton 17
In places Bolton played some very good rugby and overall deserved the win. It was pleasing to get the fifth win of 2018. Considering the conditions both sides played very well. The pitch became very heavy towards the end, as too did the ball and this made passing and catching more difficult. Ben Cottam had a very good game in both defence and attack and was named Man of the Match.
