Bolton 21 Fleetwood 13

Bolton were back in business after a three week lay-off due to the inclement weather. The visitors, Fleetwood, agreed to an early kick-off at the Avenue so that all the players could watch the England versus France game.
The conditions did play a part in the game as rainfall made the pitch and the ball very slippery. Both sides started the game well and Fleetwood opened the scoring with a penalty in the thirteenth minute. Bolton were awarded a penalty in the sixteenth minute which Louis Lockett converted to level the scores. Bolton’s defence looked a bit rusty from not having played together for so long. This left gaps which Fleetwood exploited to score a try in the twenty-seventh minute which they converted. Bolton began to get their act together - Ryan McClusky made a very good break and the ball was passed down the line to Will Bate who went over for the try. Bolton began to play some good rugby and put pressure on Fleetwood’s goal line and as a result Bolton were awarded two penalties in the thirty-ninth and the forty-first minute which Louis Lockett converted.
Half time score: Bolton 14 Fleetwood 10
In the second half the game could have gone either way with both sides trying to dominate possession. Bolton’s defence in the second half was much improved and they put Fleetwood under a lot of pressure. In the sixty-fifth minute Fleetwood were awarded a penalty which they converted. Bolton began to dominate and had a very good chance to score, only for Danny Joseph to be tackled about three metres from the line. Mike Mills came on as substitute for his first game of the season and was soon in the action. In the seventh minute, Mills set up a really good pass for Will Bate to slice through Fleetwood’s defence and then sprint for the line to score his second try of the game.
Full time score: Bolton 21 Fleetwood 13
It is fantastic that Bolton have maintained their unbeaten run of eight games in 2018, which means that they are now in sixth place in the league with 65 points; nine points from the top team and a game in hand. There were two ‘Men of the Match’ for Bolton this week; Will Bate and Ryan McClusky.
