Bolton travelled the short distance to Eccles on a very wintery day. The game was played in windy and snowy conditions. Bolton, again, came out on top and they continued their unbeaten run of 2018. Coupled with the win just before Christmas, they have now won their last ten league games in a row which places them fourth in the league.
Bolton played against a strong wind in the first half and the plan was to build a lead by half time. In the fifth and twenty-sixth minutes Mike Mills converted two penalties. Bolton tackled well and had some chances to score but conditions did not help with either passing or kicking. In the forty-fourth minute Bolton won the ball just outside their own twenty-two. With some hard running and fluid passing Danny Joseph finished off the move and the half with a score in the corner.
Half-time score: Eccles 0 Bolton 11
The snow and wind were worse at the beginning of the second half. Bolton kept to their task. In the forty-fifth minute from a ruck James Singleton gave Louis Critchlow a lovely inside pass. He then broke the defence line and ran twenty -five metres to score under the posts. Mike Mills added the conversion. Bolton were on the attack again and the Eccles’ winger intercepted a pass and ran fifty-five metres to score. Bolton came straight back and had much of the ensuing possession which kept Eccles pinned back in their own half. In the fifty-fifth minute, Bolton drove the Eccles’ forwards back and captain, Rhys Pritchard went over for a try. Rhys followed that up in the sixtieth minute by finishing off a well worked try which Mills converted. Rhys’ hattrick try was scored after some beautiful inter play between the backs and the forwards and a wide pass to him to go over in the corner. The final try of the game came in the seventy-sixth minute, when Chris Cockton made a great run and off-load that put Ryan McClusky through the gap to score. Mills added the conversion.
Final score: Eccles 7 Bolton 42
Despite the heavy snowstorms and the strong wind Bolton were worthy winners. To win ten games in a row is very commendable. Bolton have some tough games ahead and if they show the same commitment and endeavour they could continue the run. There were two Men of the Matches again this week; Rhys Pritchard and Louis Critchlow.
