Upper Eden kicked to Bolton to get the game underway. Eden had brought a large, experienced pack who matched Bolton up front. There was good counter rucking from both sides throughout, with the forwards competing to win ball at the breakdown. Bolton were dominating out wide however, with team giraffe Jez Rees causing Upper Eden all sorts of problems.
Bolton scored first as Jez Rees made a break and was stopped just short. Tom Relph managed to not knock the ball on (which the team agreed was a nice change) and score. Conversion kicked by Tom Price.
Rees then broke again and fed Rick Sandbrook only to get the ball back (man of glass Rick obviously didn’t fancy the contact much) and was clear to score under the posts, Converted by Price.
Parrish was next to score when he picked from a 5 metre scrum and crashed over.
Eden then struck straight back with a penalty in front of the sticks.
Ormes also added a try to give Bolton a commanding lead at Half Time.
In the second half Eden upped their game and stole a lot of Bolton ball. Good running from Murtagh saw him score in the corner (definitely Murtagh this week), Conversion missed by Price.
Then the evergreen, golden shorted, 47 year old veteran Mike Singleton dummied and went in a gap and was clear to score under the posts.
Danny Barlow for once actually managed to tidy up a bouncing ball (giving himself a 12% success rate for the day) before a hole opened up for him to break the Upper Eden defence and score. The hole must have been massive, it needed to be in order for him to squeeze his frame through.
The next try came as Peter Brogan threw a miss pass to Tom Relph who had the pace to score in the corner, conversion missed by Relph.
Then with the last play of the game Bolton lost concentration from the kick off, mishandled and lost possession. Upper Eden seized the opportunity and broke through a gap to score their only try of the game with the final play.
