Clitheroe started the stronger, with only a fierce Bolton defence denying them. Having weathered the (first) storm Bolton then looked to play more of the game in the Clitheroe half. Strong runs from Steve Taylor, Joey Gore and Sean Cullen stood out, but these only came after solid work from the forwards, playing against a bigger heavier pack.
A searching kick from Taylor put Bolton nicely inside the Clitheroe 22. From the lineout and ensuing maul, Dan Taylor made a nice stretch for the line right and Bolton were ahead, 7 - 0.
Clitheroe pulled one try back, 7 -5, but for the most part the Bolton defence stood firm. And they gave as good as they got, with periods of pressure on the Clitheroe line, but here too, the Clitheroe defence stood firm.
And then came the second storm. The heavens opened, the spectators were soaked.
This seemed to spur on the Clitheroe side, and with their heavier pack taking its toll on the Bolton boys, they finished with 2 late scores to take the win, 7 - 15.
James Gallagher was picked as Man of the Match by Clitheroe. He then quaffed his pint of Guinness to easily win the 4 way drink-off in the clubhouse afterwards. :-)
