Blackpool 1st 10 Bolton 4th 42
With Bolton's front row ravaged by shopping-itis, the decidedly light-weight team made the trek to Lancashire's Fylde coast. The chilly sea breeze was blowing straight into the unlit changing room, and out through the gaps in the roof.
Bolton started well putting early pressure on the Blackpool line. With a blast from the past, the old 'DM' move was tried with centre Jack 'grab a granny' Cormican being stopped just short of the line. Blackpool then woke up and took play back down to the Bolton line. A speculative kick thru was touched down by Bolton for a 22m drop out. The long drop out cleared the immediate danger. From turnover ball Bolton kicked ahead into the Blackpool 22. The Blackpool player misjudged the ball and when he finally tried to clear the ball, Gaz Flounders charged it down, and as the pursuing players wondered where it had gone it bounced nicely into the arms of James Lock who crossed the line to score his second try in his second game. From the restart Blackpool began to use their extra weight and from an ensuing maul they drove over the line to score. Bolton now began to move the ball wide, with Ben 'hamstring' Harwood coming close to scoring. But Bolton kept letting Blackpool off the hook by conceding too many penalties, which allowed Blackpool to clear their lines and push Bolton back into their own half. From a Bolton scrum, Flounders picked up at 8 and carried the ball. From the ensuing ruck the ball was recycled to the backs, with full back Jack 'long hair' Dickinson hitting the line and going thru to score near the posts. Captain Keith Howie added the conversion. As Bolton pressed again, centre Ben Hill was upended and spear tackled into the ground, The tackler was sent to the sinbin and Howie added the 3 points from the penalty. Bolton were now in the ascendency with only little mistakes and the heavy ground holding them back. From a ruck near the Blackpool line, Howie darted down the undefended blind side to add another try. Minutes later a Howie run was finished off by Carlos Spencer who dived over the line, narrowly missing the post, to score. Howie added the conversion. Blackpool 5 Bolton 27.
The second half followed a similar pattern with lost of Bolton pressure, but no points to show for it. Finally the break had to come, and following a passing move that went thru 7 pairs of hands, visiting flanker Stuart 'fly boy ' Catherall was tackled just inside the 22m, however Les Towler was on his shoulder to take the popped pass and finish the move off with a score. Flounders added his second as he burst thru the Blackpool defence to score. And Spencer added his second after he finished off after a Howie break. Blackpool finished off with a consolation try.
Final score Blackpool 1st 10 Bolton 4th 42.
