After a two week lay off Bolton 4ths travelled to face the Mountain Men of Colne & Nelson 2nds at their haven perched up on Pendle Hill...

...just below the snow line. A mix & match team had a few players out of position and a few others suffering from the previous nights excesses at the Club Sportsman’s Evening!

A soggy pitch wasn’t going to suit the speedy Backs in Bolton’s line up but, after a slow start the first try came from a trademark tap and go from Captain Keith Howie popping a pass out to Gaz ‘Farmer’ Flounder to score in the corner, conversion not made 0-5.

The next score came after a scrum in midfield, the ball kicked through and chased down by Ben ‘Teflon’ Hill, who was caught, but a penalty against the defenders was quick tapped by ‘Tef’ himself and finished under the posts. Converted by Howie, 0-12.

There then followed three more tries before the half time break. The first from Ben ‘Soldier Boy’ Harwood under the posts after an excellent run up the pitch, followed by an open play jinking run by Captain Howie again under the posts. The final score in the first half came from great break from guest Colt Rory ‘Me on the wing?’ Biggins who was finally caught about 20yds out but from the resulting ruck Howie popped the ball to Jim ‘Diamond’ Sharples to shake off last night’s after dinner Port with a trundle over the line and score.

End of first half 0-33 to Bolton.

Other highlights of the half included Sam ‘it must be something I ate’ Harwood crawling off the wing early in the half to lie moaning pitchside and Nick ‘Action Man’ Bridges taking a sniper shot to the shoulder – cured by surgically applied cold water.

Captain Howie rallied the troops to make sure they didn’t become complacent in the second half and aim for no opposition score – from the re-start the team of course sat back and despite scoring first through ‘Farmer’, Bolton conceded a sloppy try to bring it to 7-38.

Colne & Nelson deserved their score as they rallied when Bolton took their foot off the gas for most of the second half. Despite that Bolton did pick up two more tries from ‘Farmer’ to get his hat trick and finally after great work at 10 all day ‘Carlos’ Spencer Pettitt under the posts.

Final score 7-50 to Bolton 4ths and it snowed for the last 20mins ‘up in them hills’!

2nd half light hearted highlight was Eric ‘Sanatogen’ Cruice’s look of disgust when Mark ‘Robbo’ Robinson wandered off the pitch without telling anyone he was going and interrupted Cruice’s customary mid game nap because he had to go back on.

Bolton know they will have to improve on their second half performance this coming Saturday when they face Didsbury TH 4 at the Theatre of Trees in the Raging Bull Plate Semi-final.
