From the start, they pressed the Colne line, with only kicked clearances from Colne delaying the inevitable. From slick handling by the backs, Jack Dickinson sped off Down the wing to be tackled just short of the line. Two rucks later and Duncan Craigen crossed the whitewash to open the scoring. The conversion was missed.
Within minutes Craigen set off on a barnstorming run, off Loading to stand-off Carlos Spencer to score under the posts. The conversion was . . missed !
Within 5 minutes, another try, as captain Keith Howie released the backs, Dickinson again speeding off Into the distance, committing the mans and offloading to Spencer who scored his second. Conversion Missed.
Bolton now had the bit between their teeth, and once again it was from a Craigen run, that he offloaded to Spencer who put Ben Hill into space to break the Colne line to score. Howie added the conversion. Ali Wilde, playing at number 8, was making the Position his own, with a fine performance, and he was rewarded with a solo try, again converted by Howie. As the half drew to a close, Howie took a quick tap penalty and zipped through the Colne defence to score and add the conversion.
Half time Bolton 36 - Colne 0
Despite being 36 points Down, Colne never gave up, and the second half began slowly for Bolton as Colne held their own for quite a while. Indeed it was from a line out in their own 22m that the next try came. Colne won the line, but a sloppy pass was intercepted by Wilde, who tore off to the half way line. As he committed defenders he passed to Craigen who took the ball on into the Colne 22, where he offloaded to Spencer who crossed the line for his third try of the afternoon. Conversion added.
The next try was from good solid forwards effort, which took the ball to the Colne try line, before Howie popped over the line for his second. Conversion missed. Further pressure kept Colne pinned back and it was from a charged down clearance that the next try came. As the attempted clearance was charged down by the Bolton players, it was a 2 horse, well a carthorse and a derby winner, race to touch the ball down over the Colne line. As the 2 Bolton players dived on the ball, the try was scored. But by who? Second Row Jim Sharples, claimed it, his first try for the club, in 3 seasons. Winger Bryan Taylor, said he didn't like to see a grown man cry, so he was happy to let Jim claim it.
Two more tries followed, an interception by Spencer in his own half made it four for him and a powerful run and multiple hand-offs allowed Craigen to cross for his second of the day.
Final score Bolton 65 Colne 0
