Chorley knocked for SIX when Sackfield scores FIVE as Bolton FOURS win THREE in succession TO climb up the league table, aided by Sam’s Dad with ONE try, but Macdonald catches NONE.
With the regular team decimated by cry-offs, hangovers and shopping trips further up the Club, Bolton were scratching around to make up their numbers. Even team manager Les Towler had to don his kit to help out. A good warm up put everyone in the right frame of mind, and with a minute of the start Ken Sackfield roared thru the Chorley defence to open his account. A second similar try followed within 5 minutes. University player Akram Obaid was next to put his name on the score card, as fellow student Sam Roblett switched play at the back of the scrum to fly-half Towler, who drew the defence before releasing his winger who ran it in from 65 yards. Tom Byrne, playing his best game ever, was next to score, with Sackfield adding another before half time.
In the second half Chorley came back with a succession of penalties, but Bolton’s defence stood strong all day. Tries in the half came from bullocking runs by Sackfield, 2, good supporting play by Harrison Peak, 2, and finally for Sam’s Dad, captain John Kelly who scored his first of the decade. Sackfield added five conversions in the game.
An excellent performance from, on paper, a weakened team, but on the day, all concerned gave their all to a great team performance. The win sees Bolton jump to 4th in the league.
Man of the match – Tom Byrne, who put some crunching tackles in, carried the ball well and topped it with a personal try. Just a shame he had no money to pay his match subs!
