Bolton hosted Burnley 3rds, current league leaders, for the first Cup game of the season. Having lost heavily 2 weeks ago up at Burnley, Bolton were keen to avenge that defeat. Having had 30 confirmations in the week, the squad had been reduced to 24 by match day.
From the off, Burnley gave it everything that they had got, and for nearly 20 minutes they had 90% of the possession. But strong Bolton tackling kept them well outside the Bolton 22. On a rare piece of Bolton possession in their own half, Matt Robinson picked up at the back of a ruck, and went blind, beating the winger and wrong footing the full back, to score. 5 – 0. Once again play settled to a mid park tussle, with Bolton defending fiercely, with Bolton gradually coming more into the game. From good pressure, the ball was moved through good hands , then recycled in the backs freeing Spencer to finish it off. 10 – 0. A half time lead, with the big Burnley pack working hard, but being knocked down time after time by superb Bolton defence.
As Burnley tired, Bolton took their opportunities to attack, but the Burnley defence was strong. But as they conceded a penalty, the ball was moved wide quickly with Ben Hill diving over to score. 15 – 0. The final try came from Bolton tackling leading to a loose, dropped Burnley ball, which Robinson kicked thru and chased to the line, From the ruck he picked up and nipped over for his second. Conversions added. 22 – 0.
A much better team performance than we’ve seen for some time, with an attacking edge backed up by a defence that was determined to let nothing pass. Can’t mention everyone who deserves to be, cos there were, quite literally, too many to mention !
