Bolton travelled to New Brighton to play the 3rd round of the cup. In shocking motorway driving conditions, we were expecting a quagmire when we got there, but it brightened up and the sun came out. Maybe this would be a nice afternoon, after all. And then we arrived, saw that they were out on the pitch warming up and they were . . quite large !
After a reasonable start, New Brighton (NB) produced a BIG scrum, then moved the ball wide, 0 - 5.
Another gap appears and their winger runs in to score, 0 - 12
Same again, 0 - 17
With Bolton's first incursion into the NB 22, we win a line out. Unfortunately the ball is lost, but the tackle on the ball carrier results in a spilled ball, and Tom Swift picks up and dives over, 7 - 17.
And that was the half time score.
Following a NB knock on, seen by all but the referee, NB are awarded a penalty, 7 - 20
As the big NB scrum wins the ball again, the scrum walks forward, but splits, the back half then kicks it forward into their own front row and then dive on it. Offside, surely, but the referee awards a try ! 7 - 27
A gutsy performance from Bolton who never gave up against a physically bigger team.
