George Cargery impresses on debut and Mason Lockley bags a hat trick

After a tough game the previous week at Sedgley Park Bolton Senior Colts were up to put things back on track this week in the sunshine against visitors Aldwinians. Aldwinians has several of their squad missing and could only field 13 players but throughout the game they never stopped playing for their team mates and were an absolute credit to their club and coaches.
Bolton, playing in changed black and white started the game as full pace and within minutes captain Josh Holmes put Adam Kazmi into space and he outpaced the covering defence to score under the posts giving Tom Hill the easiest of conversions; 7-0. Josh Holmes then quickly added a brace of tries of his own as the home team got on top and moved their opponents around the field. To Aldwinians’ credit they didn’t stop tackling but the runners in the Zebra stripes were relentless.
Charlie Hardern out-paced and out-muscled the defence to score after gathering Josh’s chip and Joel Thomspon’s angled run against the grain saw him score untouched as he powered through the visitors’ pack. Jacob Walker also showed a great touch on the ball combined with some power runs and influential work around the breakdown.
Mason Lockley rounded off the first half with a hat trick of excellent scores to maintain and improve his try a game ratio. To think he was struggling with a shoulder knock as well made his power running even more impressive.
Tom Hill was 8 for 8 with the conversions and at half time the score was 56-0 to Bolton.
In the second period Bolton shuffled their resources and James Sykes took over at Stand Off after he finished the first period at Scrum Half; James linked well with his backs and Tom and Joey will need to look to their laurels over the coming matches. Debutant George Carbery also entered the fray for his first taste of club rugby.
Connor Orrell who was immense throughout resumed the scoring after just 2 minutes and over the next 30+ minutes Bolton added a further 8 tries. Joe Partington and Elliot Williams both added a brace and George Carbery scored on his debut and looks a great prospect. George’s try was rewarded by a great response from the team and supporters but the biggest cheer of the day went to Jacob Walker as slotted home a drop kick to improve Elliot’s first score.
Aldwinians’ determination and resolve was rewarded mid way through the half when they powered over after yet more aggressive defence turned the ball over in the Bolton 22m area. A try that was well deserved.
Bolton bounced back and with Joe Partington, Ryan McClusky, George Weston and Jordan Ashton leading the way in defence the visitors didn’t get a second opportunity for points. In fact it was impressive how well Bolton defended across the team and were disappointed to not have kept Aldwinians from crossing their line.

The best try of the second period was a three pronged affair, Mason Lockley’s burst through the centre was stopped by a superb tackle from the Aldwinian defence, as he fell he popped the ball to Joey Gore who was tackled immediately but flipped the ball to the supporting Tom Hill who outpaced the defence to score in the corner and make his points total for the day 25.

Harry Kay again impressed and it was his secure play that led directly to a try and Nathan Riding Farrell had a great game taking over the hooking role. Jordan Ashton unfortunately couldn’t get his name on the score sheet despite being within a centimetre or two and putting in a performance of class both in attack and defence.
The scoring was rounded off by two late tries by Joey Gore who made it 17 tries shared between 11 scorers and took the final score over the 100 mark to 107v5.
Plaudits go to all the Bolton team who played the game in the right way and to our visitors from Aldwinians who did themselves proud. However, the final word needs to go to George Carbery who scored on his debut and impressed all his new team mates.
Well done to both teams and Bolton will look forward to something of a backlash which we are sure we will receive when we visit Aldwinians later in the season.
