Despite a brave performance u16s fall short but go out with their heads held high.

Bolton Under 16s visited Eccles in the semi final of the Blacksticks Vase and right from the warm up it seemed that it wasn’t going to be their day. Jacob Walker was injured before the game and that knocked the lads back.
However, from the first whistle the boys in red battled for everything and frustrated the home side with their tenacious defence. With ball in hand Bolton looked dangerous but field position was of the essence and just one foray from deep too many led to Eccles pulling in front.
A superb break from Ryan McClusky had the home side reeling and quick hands put Will McCambridge into space in midfield where only a great tackle form the opposing full back saved a certain score.
The Bolton ill-luck continued with Adam Kazmi having to leave the field with an injured shoulder and James Kerwin quickly joining him with a bang to the face. While Bolton reorganised Eccles pulled out to 17-0 at the break.
In the second period Man of the Match Ryan McClusky showed his versatility when he switch to full back and both he and the ever dangerous Will McCambridge could both have broken Bolton’s duck. On the wings Firth Lord and Joey Gore had a couple of chances, Joey outstripping the defence on one occasion after great play by Joe Partington only to be taken at the last by a good cover tackle from the home captain.
Eccles drew out to 31-0 despite the excellent work up front by Jordan Ashton and Players’ Player of the match Tom McCormick. Joe and Joseph Partington both put in stellar performances and the Coaches couldn’t split them for their award.
Jordan Fishwick seized his chance late on with some strong runs in his first performance while Jordan Greenhalgh and Connor Blades also registered their first games for the 16s.
Good luck to Eccles in the final, they deserved the victory but Bolton’s performance in defeat was excellent and the lads didn’t deserve to lose by that margin.
Ever onwards and upwards and back to the training paddock for a strong final month and a build to the step up to Colts rugby next season
