Bolton U14’s played Rochdale in their first Black Sticks league game this season.

Due to a number of injuries and some illness, only fifteen players were fit and able to turn out and do battle with a large and experienced Rochdale side.
The game was played with frenetic pace from both sides, with all the Bolton players literally playing out of their skins, so intense was the effort. Curtis Waugh playing out of his normal position did one of his magical jinking runs and evaded half of the Rochdale team before touching down for a great try. Tyler Corless, not to be outdone, followed this with a terrific individual try under the posts. A third try from Rob Wilcock, who ran virtually the full length of the pitch, made it 17 – 0. Bolton seemed to have it in the bag. Rochdale now made their slick handling and support play start to count by running in a couple of tries in the corner (17 – 12) game on. Tyler Corless responded with another great run and scored a try which he also converted (24 – 12). Rochdale ran in another try just before half time (24 – 17).
The second half saw a weary Bolton team concede two tries in quick succession. Rochdale had the lead at (24 – 29) and believed they were cruising to victory. The Bolton players responded by defending like heroes, despite losing Tyler Corless to injury and playing the last ten minutes with fourteen players. They held on to the last few minutes until Luke Halsall slipped the ball to Rob Wilcock in his own 22. Rob ripped through the Rochdale defence, with a run Jason Robinson would have been proud of. He scored to level the points and just missed with the conversion by a whisker. The match ended (29 – 29) and was a pleasure to watch with both sides playing some fantastic rugby. The Bolton boy’s showed how far they have come as a unit and played for each other with absolute passion. Well done lads and as Louis (Asst Coach)said “You were awesome”.
A deserved man of the match went to Rob Wilcock.
Grafter’s award went to Matthew Holden and tackler of the match went to Danny Crowther.
Well done lads you made us all proud today.
Chris Halsall
