Competitive rugby returns to Bolton with the Lancashire Cup

Jill Rowbotham

Two senior fixtures, fresh faces and a lively afternoon at the club this Saturday

Bolton Rugby’s first competitive home match of the season takes place this Saturday, with Didsbury Toc H visiting for a 3pm kick-off. It promises to be a great afternoon of rugby and a fantastic opportunity for supporters, friends and families to get behind the team.

With the delay to the league season, Lancashire RFU have brought forward the cup rounds and this Saturday is semi-final weekend, with the winners at Avenue Street playing either Aspull or Broughton Park for a place in the Brian Leigh Trophy Final.

Having faced each other in a pre-season friendly, where both teams had large development squads getting a run out, Head Coach Ross Hayden is excited about the prospect of seeing how his young charges are developing into an exciting, free flowing team. When asked about the fixture, his response curt and straight to the point in typical Yorkshire fashion was, “The young lads have worked hard and are enjoying their rugby, I am confident they all know their Left and Right.”

When pressed for any strategic insight or players to look out for… “The Backs, my biggest concern this week is the rumour of pizza at the Junior Coaches meeting on Monday and the number of 1st XV forwards carb loading so early in the week.”

There will be even more action to enjoy, as Bolton’s second team also host Stockport 3s in a friendly. With two senior sides taking to the field at home, there is every reason to come down, watch the matches and enjoy the atmosphere around the club.

New opportunities and familiar faces
The day will also showcase the strength and spirit of the club, with a number of young players stepping up alongside familiar faces returning to Bolton colours. Their involvement is an encouraging sign for the season ahead and gives supporters plenty to look forward to.
