Bolton welcomed their old friends from Trafford MV to Avenue street for a friendly fixture. What a difference a year makes in dual age band girls rugby.
It was a bitterly cold day with freezing rain and you just felt the girls were affected by the conditions.
Last year Bolton were evenly matched with the Trafford side with the spoils equalled throughout the season. The transition of a team from u12's to u14's can make all the difference. A strong u12's set up feeding the higher age group makes all the difference. Trafford benefitted from a strong u12's group the previous season and it showed when Trafford were able to take advantage of poor tackling and defence by the home side.
Bolton started the game well but as the game grew they failed to work as a team and lapse tackling and the failure to secure their own rucks cost them dearly. Trafford scored numerous tries before Betty W Made an excellent interception 10 metres out from the Trafford line and ran in under the posts. Iona B converted the try.
Trafford dominated the scrums with their powerful forwards. What put in Bolton won at the scrums was stolen every time by the Trafford pack.
Aisha A, Holly T and Betty W, never stopped tackling. Iona B, playing a crucial position at 10, had to leave the field which was a big loss with Bridget S having left the field some minutes earlier with a leg injury.
Trafford continued to make inroads through the poor Bolton defending and scored several more tries.
Bolton were able to score one more try after a good run by Betty W was halted on the half way line. Holly T picked the ball up from the resulting ruck, broke through the Trafford defence, kicked the ball ahead of the advancing winger over the Trafford line and won the foot race to dive on the ball for Bolton's second and last try, which was actually deemed the try of the match by the opposition's coaches. Trafford won convincingly and it's back to the training ground for the Bolton girls. A disappointing day at Avenue street.
Betty W was awarded the opposition's player of the match along with parents choice. Holly T won coach's player and Maddie I won Vice Captain's award after a great second half performance.
