
Bolton Amazons hosted the U16s girls from Rochdale for a rare 11am kick off. Bolton could only field 13 players due to illnesses and injuries.
As the whistle blew, the home team were quick to score with a few strong carries by the forwards, and then quick ball to the backs for Amelia C to receive the ball and sprint down the left wing, securing her first try of two in the game. The game was back and forth throughout the first quarter until Rochdale fought back strongly and managed to score despite the Amazon's strong defence. 5 v 5.
Storm Amy was making conversions very difficult and neither was converted.
More strong carries came by the forwards, lead by Felicity R, Sophie R and Charlotte S, who were quick to the breakdown and managed to turnover the ball numerous times, securing possession and preventing potential tries from the opposition.
The Amazons were on the attack again. A great pass from Eilidh B allowed Holly T to dummy her opposite number and dive over for a try. 10 – 5.
A short time later, Amelia C scored her second try of the game after neat handling skills down the back line from Holly T, Maisey M, to Tope O who took a powerful carry.
Amelia was given the ball on the blindside again running down the wing, handing off defenders and dotting down the ball on the left edge. Cruel conditions from Storm Amy kept the try unconverted.
At half time the score was 15 – 5 Bolton.
After a short half time break, the Bolton Amazons were determined to secure the win. On the attack again, the forwards organised some ruthless pods with hard carries from Isabel McN, Bridget S and Scarlett D. Again, the Amazons passed the ball along the back line to Tope O, who got her first try of the game. Rochdale never gave up and started the second half strongly. The strong Rochdale side had not given up as they managed to score a second try which was converted. This try was making the score 20 – 12 to Bolton.
Rochdale started to come back into the game. With some good tactical kicking and sensing a lot of space behind the Bolton team.
One such kick left Bolton’s defence scrambling, which allowed Rochdale to put pressure on Bolton. With Bolton making panicked mistakes, the ball was loose on the ground allowing Rochdale to pick up the ball and dot over the try line for an easy try. This try was unconverted. 20-17.
With lots of firm defence from Bolton with strong tackles from Aisha A, Holly T, Erin S and Amelia C, allowed the Amazons to progress further. Once in attack, the ball was passed from Eilidh B to Holly T, to Aisha A who weaved around defenders to weaken their defensive line. Eilidh B spotted an overlap on the right wing and passed to Maisey M who had a powerful carry and offloaded to Tope O who carried over the line with lots of determination and resilience to secure her second try of the game. 25-17.
With 2 minutes to go, the Rochdale side never gave up. With smooth handling skills the ball was passed from one end of the pitch to the other where the winger had a clear opportunity to score. The try was unconverted and the final score was 25 – 22 to Bolton.

A joint coaches' award went to both Bridget S and Sophie R.
