Bolton were visited by a strong National Cup Chester team in the 1st round of the Lancashire Challenge. Bolton who are sitting in Pool A of the challenge have some formidable opposition in Chester, LSH and Littleborough.
Chester applied pressure right from the start, putting Bolton on the back feet. Failure to retain the ball for long periods cost Bolton dearly and unable to clear their lines, Chester were soon on the scoresheet. Stout defending prior to that on the Bolton line eventually caved in.
Bolton did have possession of the ball at times but were unable to retain it and Chester came away with it. In the set pieces, scrum and lineout Bolton were able to hold their own and at times were able to drive the Chester scrum backwards. The front row of Libby B, Charlotte S, and Felicity R backed by second rows Evie E, Isabel McN and Scarlett D were immense in the scrums and Sophie R jumping in the lineout was stealing the opposition ball. Unfortunately, a bit of indiscipline gave away a few penalties. At half time the score was 0-17 to Chester. But it had been a very competitive first half.
The teams turned around at halftime, and the strong Bolton support were hoping for a turnaround in fortune, but it wasn’t to be. Amelia C was able to make a couple of breaks, but the strong Chester defence wasn’t going to let any of the home side through.
Good forward play by Bolton at times resulted in Chester coming out with the ball because of poor retention. Holly T intercepted a Chester pass in her own half and made a break but was hunted down by several Chester players and with no immediate support it gave Chester the time to get back in defence. But for try saving tackles by Betty W the final score could have been a lot more than 0-39.
A tough day at the Theatre of Trees for the home side, but their heads never dropped.
The home side had very few scoring opportunities and that was a result of possession percentages. The game was lost around the contact area.
Plenty to work on in training in the coming weeks before they play the top team LSH in the challenge.
A big thank you to J Hopkins for sponsoring the new girls' shirts which were worn for the first time on Sunday. Also, a big thank you to all the players individual sponsors which has meant that the girls were able to purchase after match attire.
Coaches’ player of the match was Amelia C, who also picked up the players player.
Captains’ player went to Holly T, and parents player went to Iona B.
