Bolton under 15’s hosted Stockport in a friendly encounter on a mild February morning at Avenue Street. With Stockport flying high in the Cheshire league, this fixture was billed as Bolton’ s preparation for the Cup quarter final coming up in March against top tier opposition.

From the off, Stockport's discipline and domination in the ruck saw them score two early tries to take a twelve point lead in the first six minutes and a rout looked to be in the cards for the visitors. However, Bolton dug deep and began to exert pressure of their own through tireless work from Oliver Keogh at flanker and stand in number 8 Fred Holt-Gregson. Mark Glynn at full back had an outstanding game , keeping Stockport’s breakaway opportunities to a minimum.

Bolton’s industry and effort was rewarded on 24 minutes when captain Ben Price scored a fine solo try, evading multiple tackles and kicked the conversion himself to put the Home side temporarily back in the frame. By the end of the half it was somewhat against the run of play when Stockport took an early penalty and worked the ball out for a try as the period ended.

Despite a bright start to the second half including big tackles from centres Leon Hodson and Sam Atherton and second row Logan Singleton , the physicality of the game began to take its toll necessitating some substitutions and reorganisation of the side including regular hookers playing at second row and flanker. Stockport again struck first, only for Bolton to score again through the ever reliable Leon Hodson, taking his season’s points tally to 100 in only 14 appearances. There was little time for Bolton to complete the comeback, and Stockport took advantage of Bolton committing forward to help themselves to a retry at the death and to give the scoreline an unrepresentative look. Bolton can be pleased with the effort they put in to keep a very well drilled side in sight and Stockport will have returned down the M60 knowing that they had been in a competitive match.

Final score: Bolton 14 Stockport 31
