Indiscipline costs Bolton in tight affair.

In changeable weather conditions a much changed Bolton 2nd team headed down the East Lancs to face fellow promoted De La Salle in what turned out to be a tight encounter. Missing their massively fat captain to what has been described as merely a shaving injury Bolton were led out by stalwart Pete Marriott who when combined with Rob Terry playing at 9 completed perhaps the most offensively ginger half back pairing even seen in Bolton shirts.

The game started with Bolton very much under the cosh, as their Salford neighbours pinned them back deep in their own half. However Bolton rallied with an excellent defensive line and some thundering hits that would continue to provide a positive throughout the entire game, Pete ‘Did you see my pass?’ Brogan stopping everything at his unusual centre berth and Stuart ‘worse than his brother’ Evans adding a couple of rib ticklers. The tackling was such that even penalty machine and all round monobrow enthusiast Dave Ormes was seen to bring the proverbial boom, obviously due to hazy bad memories from his last meeting with De La….

Bolton were playing well and soon began to exert pressure in the set piece, with both scrum and line out getting on top. However they were often finding themselves playing from the wrong areas of the pitch, on one such occasion a missed opportunity to clear their lines brought a 5m scrum were all it took was a miss controlled loose ball for De La Salle to kick through and touch down for the lead (conv missed). Bolton fought well for the rest of the half but couldn’t cross the whitewash although Paul ‘Abrasions’ Sutcliffe went close running from the back of Boltons dominant scrum and Joe Waller very nearly dotted down in the corner following a flowing backs move.

H/T Score – 5 - 0

The second half would prove one of frustration for the Cherry and Whites as the game became tighter and indiscipline pegged back any attempt to get back into the game. Said indiscipline in the last 20 minutes then saw De La Salle slowly creep out of reach with two long range penalties.

It will go down as one that Bolton could have won, but with such indiscipline and penalty count we put beyond our grasp. Positives can be taken though, a strong defensive and set piece display by all involved gives a great base on which to build from.

F/T Score – 11 – 0
