The one with 11 tries

Bolton colts played their first match of 2022 with a win at neighbours Bury.

Depleted by injuries, Bolton could only field 14 players despite the addition of new signing Dan McMenamin the second row.

The opening 10minutes was a strangely frantic affair with Bolton although having most of the possession not seemingly controlling the game and panicking at Bury’s harrying. Even so , in the midst of this frenetic activity, Bolton took the lead with tries from Mark Glynn and Jack De Mullet, who celebrated his return from injury by running on to his own kick and touching over.

In a game with many handling errors, there were a lot of scrums in which Bury had the better of the Bolton pack and it was with their heavier front row that they were able to take of advantage of a penalty inside the Bolton 22 power over to score and halve the deficit.

Harry Mc Dermott, another returning invalid, restored the Bolton lead before Oliver Keogh scored after a well worked line out and maul to leave Bolton 22-5 up at the break.

After some Brian Clough style inspirational words from Wyn at half time, Bolton had the better of the second half with a brace of tries from lively winger Zach Edwards, a typically muscular effort from Lewis Howard, a solo run from Ben Price and second tries for Demullet and McDermott. Bury got themselves a consolation try after a blind side run from a scrum, but the award for try of the match went to Josh Moore late on. After waiting for his father to leave the pitchside to go to work, Moore produced a sublime moment of wizardry as he kicked to himself , not once, but twice in a move that took him from the halfway line to the try line. Dad will kick himself to have missed that one!

Thanks to Bury for their usual warm hospitality.

Bolton continue on their travels away to Tyldesley next weekend. Hopefully we can put out a full side!
