As Wales were crashing out of the World Cup, Bolton U16s were taking to the field for their own highly enjoyable game of Rugby against top drawer opposition in the shape of Lancaster’s Vale of Lune.

Despite holidays and injury, Bolton were still able to field a full team, albeit with some players out of position. Fred Holt-Gregson on his return from injury put in a good display, with some crucial tackles in the opening exchanges.

Leon Hodson, filling in at Fly Half marshalled his back line well, and Tom Jenkinson put in another solid performance at Hooker, with Connor Whittle and Ben Malevialle having to play an exhausting full game along side him on the front row.

If anything, Bolton had the better of the opening period, with good pressure on the Vale defence. Even when Vale got ahead after 12 minutes, the match looked to be an even contest. However, as the first half progressed Vale of Lune switched into a higher gear and their superior running, ball handling, pressure play and kicking came to bear on the embattled Bolton defence.

At the break, despite a high work rate, Bolton found themselves behind by four tries, a margin too high for them to hope to overcome. It was something of a moral victory in the second half to limit the visitors to only three tries more, with a great performance at full back from Cameron Milton and a typically combative showing from Centre Harry McDermott and flanker Oliver Keogh producing chances for Bolton that on another day would have given the scoreline a cheerier appearance.

It is a truism in sport that you learn more from defeats than victories, so Bolton should not be downhearted at this result against very strong opposition.
