On a beautiful sunlit remembrance Sunday, Bolton travelled to Liverpool St Helens hoping to secure their first win of the league season.

After a minutes silence had been impeccably observed by the teams and crowd, both sides played their full part in an entertaining and absorbing encounter of full blooded youth Rugby.

Following their promotion last season, Bolton have often been unlucky to leave empty handed on their travels this year, and so it was to be again as their better possession and forward play was not matched by good fortune.

It was against the run of play after 8 minutes when LSH opened the scoring when a penalty kick aimed at the posts fell short, and their quick thinking back row caught Bolton napping to scoop up the ball and touch over.

On 16 minutes, Bolton’s backs , with Captain Ben Price orchestrating the moves provided an opportunity through Tom Barrett who fed Harry McDermott to break clear to touch down. Unfortunately, leaves on the pitch were obscuring the pitch markings and he was ruled to be short of the line, denying McDermott what would have been a fine try.

Not downhearted, Bolton had a period of sustained pressure for the rest of the half which was rewarded on the 30 minute mark. Once again, Bolton broke clear through winger Cameron Milton only for him to also touch down short of the concealed try line. Fortunately on this occasion, flanker Oliver Keogh was on hand to pick up the loose ball and score for real.

Liverpool were the happier team to hear the half time whistle, and they regrouped during the break, scoring early in the second half to go 9 points ahead.

Despite some reorganisation through injuries, Bolton continued to press and 15 minutes from time Keogh charged down a Liverpool kick and was on hand as a favourable bounce placed the ball in his grateful arms and he sprinted away to score his second try under the posts. Price converted to bring Bolton within 2 points, and the visitors needed only one score to complete the comeback.

Despite camping inside the Liverpool 22 metre line for long periods that final crucial breakthrough was not fated to come and Liverpool broke away to score a try in the final minute to put an unmerited gloss on their win.

Bolton will curse their luck and rue their missed chances, but on this showing the results will soon follow the performances.
