Smart dress and smart play from the Under 14's

22 Bolton players travelled the short distance to play local rivals Bury in this friendly fixture. The players turned up looking smart sporting their club ties and shirts but was their game going to be a smart as their attire?
With two players unavailable through overnight illness, there was still strength in depth on the substitute’s bench.
Bolton started the game strongly winning ruck after ruck and pushing towards the Bury line, with only 3 minutes of the game gone Matty Moore dived over the white wash for his first of two tries.
Zak Grundy failed to convert this try but when you see his stats for the rest of the game this was only a small glitch. From the restart Bolton carried on in the same vein using the ball well with powerful runs from Adam Critchlow and Morgan Skeels-caldwell linking with the backs to set them free. One such run put Josh Grundy clear and he scored 3 minutes later which his brother Zak duly converted.
0 v 12. Bolton’s pressure continued and any of Bury’s forays into the Bolton half were snubbed out by great tackles, stopping them short, Bolton’s eagerness meant they were turning Bury’s ball over at the breakdown, in particular Morgan Skeels-caldwell. On 10 minutes Milo Holmes scored which was converted by Zak. Wholesale substitutions were made on 15 minutes with Paddy Hunter, Tom Crook, Owen Patel, James McDowell, Kier Kernick, and Thomas Duckworth coming on and towards the latter end of the first half further tries by Tom Crook and Matty Moore converted by Zak Grundy brought the half time score to 0 v 31. Even though six substitutions were made, strength in depth meant it didn’t affect the way the team was playing.
Alex Ramwell playing at number 8 had to leave the field of play after a knee injury following a collapsed scrum.
The team was again switched at half time allowing all those who had turned out equal opportunities to play. Ben Turner at fly half caught Bury napping and with a couple of trademark side steps discovered himself 5 metres out and popping the ball up for Morgan Skeels-caldwell to score his first of two tries. 0 v 38.Milo Holmes taking over kicking duties got the conversion. Four minutes later Ben Turner got his just rewards for his hard work and scored under the posts which Milo Holmes easily converted. It was one of those days and Bolton were on fire.
After consultation with the Bury coaching staff and referee it was decided to continue with the scores as they were.
Their teamwork was superb today with offloads a plenty. New boy Sam Dawson playing on the wing was very impressive along with Kier Kernick who showed great speed and strength. Sam was rewarded with a try on 40 minutes with a dart down the wing. Bury never gave up but were bowled over today and just couldn’t get into the game. On 42 minutes Morgan Skeels-caldwell picked the ball up at the base of a ruck and went blind from the half way line being pursued by one of Bury’s quickest players however Morgan collapsed over the line to score his second try.
Then came the conversion of the game from Zak Grundy who converted the ball from the touchline straight through the up rights. The score was now 0 v 59.
James Preston was immense in the mauls and the rucks like a ‘terrier’.
With almost 2 minutes to go Ben Turner spotted a space behind the Bury backs and kicked into the space for Josh Grundy to chase and after some deft foot work by Josh he gathered the ball and went under the posts. His brother Zak then converted the try. 0 v 66.
The Bury captain called his side together and whatever he said seemed to work because from the kick off Bury marched towards Bolton’s line and slack defending from the away side let Bury score a well deserved try.
A fantastic team effort by Bolton who played the game simply but effectively.
Awards went to Morgan Skeels-Caldwell (Most contribution)
James Preston (Tackler)
Adam Critchlow (Player of the match award)
