Sam Dawson picks up 'Player of the match' Award for debut try

Bolton entertained an U14’s Warrington Development team at Avenue Street for this re-arranged fixture after Orrell cried off.
A very rare outing on the first team pitch was welcomed by the Bolton players.
With the squad depleted with absentees and injuries, Tom Knights-Rigler, James Preston, Zak Grundy, Milo Holmes and Thomas Duckworth all injured and Kier Kernick away, the team had to be re shuffled with players playing out of position.
Sam Dawson had to come off the wing to play outside centre. James McDowell came in at scrum half for the injured Milo Holmes.
Bolton started the stronger team but the Warrington players matched the opposite numbers very well with their strong 8 being a nuisance and ripping the ball from the Bolton players at every opportunity. Morgan Skeels-Caldwell was being the usual nuisance in the rucks and mauls for Bolton with strong runs from Adam Critchlow playing hooker. Ben Turner was controlling the backs and putting some good positional kicks in.
However Warrington let their guard down on 4 minutes with Dan Southworth playing at number 8 picking up the ball at the back of a scrum and going under the posts for his first of two tries.
With regular kicker Zak injured, Ben Turner stepped up to take the kick and with a hop, step and jump it was soon 7 v 0 to the home side.
Warrington fought their way back into the game and it was not until 20 minutes later when Dan Southworth scored a similar try to his first managing to evade the away team’s tackles to go under the posts once again. Ben Turner converted this to make the score 14 v 0.
This was a Warrington development side who were matching Bolton in every department which just means to show their U14’s must have strength in depth.
With 2 minutes to go to half time Josh Grundy picked up the ball from Ben Turner on a switch move then drifted across the field picking up pace all the way and then scored under the posts which Ben converted to make the half time score 21 v 0.
In the second half Bolton started to go to sleep and let Warrington back into the game. Sloppy tackling was allowing the away team to run at the Bolton defence. Ben Turner was always first to react to Warrington’s attack which wasn’t his role, but his first up and blitz tackling was to earn him the ‘Tackler’s award at the end of the game.
Warrington soon turned all their pressure into points when on 4 minutes they went over in the corner. 21 v 5 Time for Bolton to regroup. Dan Southworth had to leave the field of play with a re-occurring knee injury. Alex Ramwell moved to Number 8 with Matty Moore coming on as flanker and Owen Patel pairing with Cameron Richardson in the second row.
6 minutes later the ball went down the Bolton back line which was picked up by Sam Dawson who sprinted towards the Warrington line to score his first try at the Club. He had the foresight to run under the posts to allow an easier kick for Ben. Great debuts try and game for Sam which earned him the ‘Player of the match’ award.
Warrington never gave up and further pressure from them led to their second try which was well worked. The final score was 28 v 10 to the home side, but it had been a great game to watch.
Alex Ramwell picked up the ‘Most contribution’ Award.
Next week is a Blackstick Blue league match at home v Waterloo, another tough game.
