A 'game of two halves' or so the saying goes.

The under 14’s travelled to Ashton Under Lyne for this half term friendly fixture. With several players away on holiday the squad was depleted but was still able to take 19 players.
Ashton had their own availability problems and was only able to field 13 players.
It was decided to lend Ashton two players to make it 15 a side. James McDowell and Elvis Majanja agreed without hesitation to play for the opposition.
Weather conditions were to dictate the game, it was wet and windy and the field was quite slippery under foot. Bolton dominated the early set pieces and around the breakdown which soon paid off after Zak Grundy received the ball after good forward possession and ran over for the first try.
He was unable to convert his try after slipping slightly just prior to the kick. 0 v 5
Dan Southworth playing at number 8 was excelling in attack and defence combining well with Captain Morgan Skeels-Caldwell. In the space of 5 minutes Dan had scored two tries after strong running, the first of which Zak Grundy converted. 0 v 19.
Then came the try of the match after Ashton kicked off Tom Crook playing at prop forward picked up the ball in his own half and took ‘route one’ straight through the grasping Ashton defence to run the length of the pitch to score. One of his trade mark ‘bullocking’ runs.
Josh Grundy added another try to this season's tally with 8 minutes to go before half time.
A great first half with Bolton managing the conditions well but Ashton never gave up. Pick of the first half players was Alex Greenhalgh who came into the forwards off the wing to play second row and who had an outstanding game. Half time score 0 v 29.
Changes were made at half time with Dan Southworth going to second row, Alex Ramwell to number 8 with Louis Jones coming on at flanker. Callum Smyth came into the front row with Milo Holmes and Kier Kernick agreeing to play for Ashton James McDowell resumed at scrum half. Elvis went back onto the Bolton wing.
The second half was a different matter. Ashton came back into the game and had good spells of dominance. Bolton were only able to score two tries one by Morgan Skeels-Caldwell on 6 minutes which Zak converted and the last try 3 minutes from the end by Dan Southworth after Morgan had broke from a ruck and unselfishly handed the try to Dan on his outside. The final whistle blew with most players unable to feel their fingers and toes.
Although Ashton didn’t score they matched Bolton for 20 minutes of the second half which made for a thrilling game. Final score 0 v 41.
