AKA The One When The Lads Learned How To Tie A Tie.
Bolton under 14's travelled to Broughton Park in the opening fixture of the qualifying pool stage of the Lancashire Junior Rugby Challenge. After the lads had mastered the dying art of tying a tie, they changed into the cherry and white hoops . From the kick off they went all out for the win and after 50 minutes play came away happy with all five points on offer.
A fairly evenly matched first few minutes saw chances for both sides to score but Bolton defended stoutly to frustrate the home team and it was Bolton who took the lead through flanker Oliver Keogh, who touched under the posts for the first of his three tries.
On nineteen minutes, Leon Hodson had a powerful run through the centre shrugging off the challenge of several defenders to double the score, which was then converted by Ben Price for the first of four such scores to go in at half time 12-0 up.
By now, the Broughton heads were down and injuries left them a player short. Bolton sportingly withdrew one of their own and play continued at 14 a side. Hodson made a strong run on the left wing and drew three defenders before popping the ball to Keogh who touched down for his second try in the opening period of the second half.
Despite Bolton's own Harry McDermott coming off through injury after a bright display, Bolton surged on in the second half and Sam Atherton and Price both took advantage of scrums won against the head to score their own tries, before Hodson grabbed his second try and Keogh completed his hat trick with the very last play of the game.
A very good performance in all departments today (especially the pack which won three scrums against the head in total and dominated in the breakdown) against a side that could have posed more problems for us if we had not been so resilient. Wigan may be a more difficult task next week, in the second pool game in this tournament.
