AKA The One Where I Was An Eye Witness. Oh Yes.
After opening the season with three big wins, Bolton u14's faced a stern test away at what is probably Lancashire's best team in this age category , Fylde. In the same fixture last season , Bolton has conceded 13 tries, so the strategy was one of taking the game to Fylde.
After just six minutes, Leon Hodson broke away after Fylde had mishandled in the Bolton half and scored the opening try of the match , which Bolton's kicker Ben Price duly converted.
Oliver Keogh, following in from his four try haul last week extended Bolton's lead to 12 with a long mazy run to touch down.
This unexpected reversal of fortune seemed to spur Fylde into action and their pack began to dominate, despite good carrying from Bolton second row Oscar Chadderton , strong tackling from flanker Fred Holt Gregson and some fearsome clearing out from number eight Levi Waite in the breakdown. Fylde are not the favourites for the Lancashire challenge cup for nothing and before half time they ran in five tries without Bolton adding to their own score, despite having good opportunities that were squandered in the final attack phase.
The second half opened brightly for Bolton with Price touching down following excellent work from new signing in the back line, Logan Singleton. Despite being outgunned in the pack, Bolton managed to secure some scrums against the head through hooker Tom Jenkinson and tight control of the pack from scrum half Sam McDowell and Waite at number eight. With five minutes to go, Hodson added a second try, but by then the game was lost with Fylde extending their score to 60 points through some careless defending and tired legs in the Bolton team.
All in all, a creditable performance against a very good side, and many positives to be taken from a battling display by the cherry and whites.
